Team Mamita wins Copa Mamita!
This weekend the battle for the Copa Mamita was raging through the region Urubamba. Twelve football teams with only twelve-year-olds (sixth grade) participated. The tournament for the Copa Mamita was hosted for the third time. Sports bring us closer together and it teaches the children to pursue their goals with sportsmanship. It was an exciting tournament, says coach Haiko Beeren from Urubamba. “When Mamita-team member Marco scores the winning goal to qualify the team for the semi-finals, and later the finals, everyone is bursting with joy.” In the end, the match was decided by the goalie, Joseph, who watched as the ball hit the post in the all-deciding penalty shootout. The Mamita team are champions! A big round of applause for the football heroes.
The Copa Mamita was named after Mamita Helena van Engelen, founder of our center Niños del Arco Iris. With this tournament, we take the time to acknowledge what Helena has done for us and still is doing for this Peruvian region. “The beauty is that these sixth graders, who are leaving after this school year, have much to thank Helena for”, says Haiko. “This tournament is a sportive shrine!”
The football tournament for the Copa Mamita is brought to us by several local sponsors and the municipality of Urubamba provides the football pitch. And so, again we collaborate towards a better future for many.
