Learning a trade and getting a qualification. That’s one route to getting along in life. Some 100 teenagers from the age of 16 follow the state-accredited vocational course of computer science or hotel/reception at Ninos del Arco Iris. Once the students have graduated, they will be guaranteed a job and income.
Vocational education CETPRO
During their 2-year course, the students get practice-oriented vocational education and follow an English course, they do an internship, and gain work experience on the project. In addition to receiving high-level education, attention is also paid to the development of their philosophy on life. The students get lessons in healthcare, hygiene, sex education, family planning and upbringing. They also get the opportunity to work as volunteers in the isolated communities and on the project site. This way they learn to become aware of themselves and their environment and to see how they can contribute to improving society. The CETPRO vocational courses fully meet the criteria of the Foundation’s goals of providing a future for the disadvantaged.
The ICT students acquire thorough knowledge of computer science. They learn about software management and software programmes, as well as internet and multimedia. Additionally, they get lessons in safety, management and financial management. Kuychi finances the equipment, learning resources and well-qualified teachers.
On the labour-market in Urubamba and surrounding areas there is an acute need for professionally trained people in the tourist sector. In view of the economic prospects for tourism in this area. the demand for professionally trained persons will only increase even more. The course is predominantly geared to everyday practice. The students learn on the job in their own hotel ‘Las Casitas’. They prepare lunches, for example, and work in the housekeeping.
For the students from disadvantaged families, graduating from these vocational courses with a state-accredited qualification is a huge step upwards on the social ladder, and forms a solid foundation for independence for themselves and their future family.
